From Rome to Barcelona, we will tour the coastal cities of Europe, exploring their magnificent buildings, their fascinating cultural heritage, and the checkered Jewish history of Italy, France and Spain.
We will share a fascinating journey through Jewish history along the Mediterranean coast, exploring the medieval Jewish quarters of Naples and Avignon, visiting Barcelona’s medieval El Call neighborhood, hearing about from Livorno’s unique experiment in religious tolerance, and how Jews sheltered in Monaco during World War Two.
Between city tours, we will relax on the luxurious Norwegian Epic cruise liner, enjoying its five-star facilities and a gourmet kosher dining experience.

Draft Itinerary
We will meet in Rome, boarding our “Norwegian Epic” cruise liner at the city’s Civitavecchia Port, and casting off into the Mediterranean Sea for our kosher adventure. (Scheduled departure at 16:00)
Salerno, Amalfi Coast
Our first stop will be Salerno, on Italy’s Amalfi coast. This was one of Italy’s most distinguished Jewish communities in medieval times, particularly renowned for its medical school where Jewish physicians and scholars made significant contributions to medicine and science.
Messina, Sicily
We will spend the day in Mesina, a historic Jewish community on the island of Sicily, in the shadow of Mount Etna. Jewish merchants and scholars thrived here, playing an active role in Sicily’s trade, finance, and intellectual life from the medieval period until the 1492-1493 expulsions.
Cruise Day
We will spend the day relaxing on board, as we cruise up the Italian coast. Take advantage of its five-star facilities – from the gym and swimming pool to theatrical shows, outdoor cinema and other fun activities.
Livorno, Florence and Pisa
Arriving at the Tuscan port of Livorno early in the morning, you can choose between various shore excursion options to three picturesque Italian cities.
Livorno became a Sephardic haven welcomed refugees from Spanish and Portuguese Inquisitions, developing into a major center of Jewish commerce, learning, and culture. Its synagogue, cemetery, and historic Jewish quarter preserve the legacy of this remarkable experiment in religious tolerance that lasted for centuries.
Florence is the capital of Jewish Tuscany. Jews played vital roles in the Renaissance city’s banking, medicine, and intellectual life. Its beautiful Moorish-style synagogue, built in 1882, and its Jewish Museum preserve artifacts and memories of this resilient community.
Pisa’s Leaning Tower and Camposanto draw the crowds, but the city’s stunning Neo-Classical synagogue, built by Jewish migrants from Spain in 1594, is also worth a visit.
Nice, France, and Monaco
Arriving in the port of Nice, you can choose to explore this stunning cosmopolitan city – the jewel of the French Riviera – or take an excursion to the independent principality of Monaco.
Renowned for its luxury and sophistication, Monaco combines royalty, glamour, wealth, super-yachts, gambling, and motorsports in just 0.78 square miles!
We will return to our ship in time to prepare for Shabbat, Kabbalat Shabbat and a sumptuous Shabbat Dinner.

Barcelona, Spain
We will disembark in Barcelona. You can spend the day exploring the city, its Gaudí architecture, and the El Call medieval Jewish quarter, or head to your next destination.
